SOUNDS OF MAAT formed out of the relationship that David and Latriece have with their spiritual family, WOSE COMMUNITY, an East Oakland-based Afrocentric spiritual community where David serves as musical director leading the musical group SOUNDS OF MAAT which he founded. The group features Latriece Love on vocals and David Goodlett on vocals and guitar, A.J. Joyce on bass (Charlie Musselwhite, Mick Fleetwood, Calvin Keys, Little Milton), Will Sapenter and Ocea Savage (Larry Graham, Dave Hollister, Tupac, Digital Underground, Timex Social Club) on keyboards,Paris King on guitar and vocals, and Hassan Hurd (the Coup, Kev Choice Ensemble) on drums. The group plays many styles of diasporan music from jazz, r&b, funk, blues and gospel inspired songs to afrobeat, highlife, soukous and other continental inspired styles. When not performing their originals, a typical service might include meditation to covers of Alice Coltrane’s Journey to Satchidnanda or Pharoah Saunder’s The Creator Has a Master Plan, a circle prayer to The Ladder by Prince, a rousing rendition of I Hear Voices by Donny Hathaway, followed by Latriece leading the band and congregation as all sing Lift Every Voice and Sing. Prior to the pandemic the group hosted a monthly event called SOUL SESSIONS at WOSE where they would pay tribute to iconic black artists such as EWF, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, Minnie Riperton, and Bob Marley and the Wailers
